It will be a proud movement that the prestigious 22nd Asian Athletics Championships to be held from 5 to 9 July at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday inaugurated the brand new synthetic track at there.
According to Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera, they were going all-out to showcase the State’s administrative acumen during the event.
The chief minister also distributed cheques worth Rs 3 lakh to five prominent Odia athletes – Dutee Chand, Sarbani Nanda, Amiya Kumar Mallick and Jauna Murmu – who have made India proud on the international stage.
Malik will represent the country in 100, 200 and 4X100 categories of the running race. Similarly, both Dutee and Srabani will run in the 100, 200 and 4X100 metres event. Hembram will take part in the Heptathlon while Murmu will run in the 400m Hurdles category.
Olympian and national record holder in the 100m women’s hurdles Anuradha Biswal, Asian Games silver medallist Pranati Mishra, Sushma Behera, former Indian women’s football captain Shradhanjali Samantray were among those who ran the inaugural race on the newly-laid track, cheered on by the CM.
