Bijay Mohanty was born on 8th Apr 1950 at Pandiri, Kendrapada and brought up at Baripada, Mayurbhanj. his schooling was at Baripada, Mayurbhanj. After his graduation from BA, he joined in the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi. His NSD batch-mates are Nasseruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Om Puri etc. He acted in many theatres in Delhi and then came to Orissa and devoted himself to directing plays. He also joined in Indian National Congress on 27 February 2014.
