Para athlete from Odisha Jayanti Behera had bagged gold for India at 400m event at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held at Nottwil, Switzerland, on Saturday.

17-year-old Jayanti Behera from Orissa, had bagged a gold medal in the 400 metres as well as a silver in the 200, clocking a time of 28.04. She bettered her silver medal by defeating the 200 metres champion, Chile’s Cerna Amanda in the 400 race, with her personal best timing of 1:01.37 minutes.

She was the lone sprinter representing India in 200m and 400m events at World Junior Para Athletic Championships.

In the recently concluded senior World Para Athletics Championships, she secured 6th place in the 400 mts event.

Born to a laborer family, poverty and disability have never been able to beat the spirit of sprinter 17-year-old Jayanti Behera, whose left hand and waist were burnt in a fire mishap when she was just one year old.

Her neighbors have never been kind to her or her family, as she had to face a lot of humiliation for her disability.
