Indian athletes were shine on the opening day of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships held in Odisha capital. The host nation performed well enough to clinch 7 medals including two gold, one silver and four bronze medals at the athletic meet held at Kalinga Stadium here.
Defending champion Vikash Gowda opened the account for India by winning bronze. Shot putter Manpreet Kaur and long distance runner G Lakshmanan grabbed gold medals on a remarkable opening day.
Manpreet with a best throw of 18.28 metres to register the first gold for India in the event. The 27-year-old Lakhsmanan then gave India the second gold with an unexpected win in men’s 5000 meter race.
Sanjeevani Jadhav won bronze in 5000 meter in women’s category. Similarly, Annu Rani won bronze medal in women’s javelin throw event. Besides, Neena V and Nayana James bagged silver and bronze medals respectively in women’s long jump.
