Niladri Bije is one of the holy rituals of the trinity ( Lord Jagannath, Balavadra and Subhadra ).It is also known as the return journey to Shree Mandir during the sacred Ratha Jatra.
Among all the rituals of Rath Yatra of Puri, the most interesting one seems to be Niladri Bije. Niladri Bije is the concluding day of Ratha yatra, is celebrated on Asadha Trayodashi.
‘Niladri’ suggests Lord Jagannath and ‘Bije’ means to enter. This is really interesting as it is all about the continuation of the fight between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Laxmi.
Lord Balabhadra and Subhadra enter the temple after they return from the vacation but Lord Jagannath is not allowed to enter the temple. A fight happens between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Laxmi in front of the temple gate.
Goddess Laxmi was angry on him as he had not taken her along for the vacation to his aunt’s place. It was only after Lord Jagannath offered Rasgolas (An Odia sweet made of cheese) to Goddess Laxmi, she calmed down. She then accepted his apology and allowed him to enter the temple. Here ends the enormous car festival of the Gods.
Peoples are also celebrating this day as the Rasgola Dibas.
