Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced a cash award of Rs 12 lakh for junior para-athlete Jayanti Behera who won two medals at recently-concluded World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland.
This award was announced at the state secretariat while felicitating Jayanti. Sports and Youth Services Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera was also present on the occasion.
Jayanti struck gold for India in the 400mts clocking 1:01 minutes. She also won a silver in the 200mts during the four-day event, which concluded on August 6.
The 17-year-old arrived to a rousing welcome at the state capital the previous day.
She would be felicitated on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day for bringing laurels to the state.
The talented athlete returned to the capital city yesterday to a rousing welcome.
Hailing from a poor family, she braved all odds to rise to such heights. Coach Bishnu Prasad Mishra had first spotted her six years ago and since then he has been training her. She is the youngest among five siblings.
