Star India has won the television and digital rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a period of five years, it is from 2018 to 2022. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has bagged Rs 16347.5 crore from a single bidder for both the rights.
Initially, 24 companies picked up rights papers to contest for the several rights up for grabs in the auction organised by the BCCI. Several big companies like Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Yahoo, Reliance Jio, STAR India, Sony Pictures, Discovery, Sky, British Telecom and ESPN Digital Media purchased the bid.
Sony had bid for 11,050 cr in comparison to Star who had submitted a 16,347.5 cr bid.
The bidding for various media rights of the cash-rich league was held in Mumbai for a five-year period from 2018-2022.
In 2008, Sony Pictures Network won the IPL media rights for a period of 10 years with a bid of Rs 8200 crore. The global digital rights of IPL for a period of three years was awarded to Novi Digital in 2015 for 302.2 crores.
